Getting Started with Arlo: First Steps and Common Tasks

Arlo helps shape your photos into a meaningful layout and gives you simple tools to continue refining your book at your own pace.

In this article, we will walk through how to start a project, choose your photos, describe your book, make edits, share a preview, and place your order.

Signing In

You must be signed in to create or save a project in Arlo. You can use the same login you use for Mimeo Photos or Motif. If you do not already have an account, you will be prompted to create one before starting.

Starting Your First Project

  1. Select your book format: Layflat Photo Book, Hardcover Photo Book, or Softcover Photo Book.

  2. Add your photos from your device or from Google Photos.
Arlo requires at least 25 photos to begin a project. This ensures Arlo has enough variety to recognize themes, organize sequences, and build clear layouts. You are welcome to include far more than this. Arlo can organize large collections smoothly.

  3. Describe your project. You will be asked to share the tone or story behind your photos. The more detail you include, the more meaningful your initial layout will feel. You may want to mention the occasion, the mood you want to capture, or whether the story should be chronological or highlight key moments.

How Arlo Designs Your Book

Once your photos are uploaded, Arlo will create a starting version of your book by selecting strong images, grouping related moments, choosing thoughtful layouts, and generating optional captions that support your story. This gives you a complete starting point to personalize.

Making Edits to Your Book

You can make updates in two ways.

  • Ask Arlo: If you would like to adjust something, simply tell Arlo what you would like changed. Examples: replace a specific photo, add or remove pages, update the book title, adjust captions, or change background colors.
  • Use On-Screen Tools: You can drag and drop photos into place, edit captions directly, and rearrange page order. You can undo or redo any action at any time while experimenting.

Viewing Your Project

Your book appears in a continuous scrollable view so you can see your story as a whole. All changes are saved automatically in the cloud. You can continue your project on your iPhone, on your computer, or on the web. All projects in progress will appear in the My Projects view.

Sharing Your Book

You can share a read-only preview link with friends or family. They can view the book exactly as you designed it and may order their own copy if they choose.

Ordering Your Book

When you are ready to order, select Add to Cart. Checkout uses the same secure process as Mimeo Photos. Any saved addresses in your account will be available during checkout.

Troubleshooting and Common Questions

  • Arlo is asking for more photos
Arlo requires at least 25 photos to begin. Add a few more to continue
  • A photo I wanted is missing
Arlo selects images it determines to be strongest. You can ask Arlo to add a specific image or drag it onto the page manually.
  • The first layout is not what I imagined
Tell Arlo what direction you want the story to move in. For example: focus more on people, highlight landscapes, or use simpler layouts.
  • My project looks different on another device
Because Arlo saves to the cloud, refreshing or reopening the app will load the latest version.
  • I want to remove or adjust captions
Ask Arlo to change the writing style, shorten captions, or remove them entirely.
  • I made a change I want to undo
Use Undo or Redo at any time. There is no limit.
